A weekly message from Enda!

Image via Wikipedia So Enda seems to be trying to catch up with the rest of the digital world and has started to send a weekly message to supporters on a Friday. I think this is a good idea, and the message seems to include lots of information. I look forward to getting it weekly. Don’t worry, I won’t post it every week. Only if its interesting! Dear Member Many of you have said to me in the past...

Abolishing NUI

Image via Wikipedia When I heard the news that Batt O’Keeffe was suggesting that that National University of Ireland be abolished, I initially thought it was a good idea. Then I stopped and thought about it and realised he must be reading from the same book that Enda was reading from! Abolishing NUI is bad idea. Yes it will save money, but not a whole lot. The NUI serves some useful functions, and it would serve more if third...

But what about the straights?

Image by gelinh via Flickr A lot of the talk surrounding the Civil Partnerships Bill is concentrating on the aspects concerned with the rights of gay partners. For a change it is the consequences for hetrosexual (and homosexual may I add) of the other part of the bill to do with cohabitation is being largely ignore. Carol Coulter had a very good analysis is yesterdays Irish Times about this. It is well worth reading. This bill will affect more...

The Elephant in the Room

Image via Wikipedia There is a very large elephant in the room in Irish politics. It is a very important issue and it cause fierce tensions and divides, but not only in Ireland. I blogged a few years back that Ireland needs an Abortion Act and recent events are making that point more necessary! The recent poll in the Irish Examiner showing that “60% of young people want abortion legalised here” shows that young people do care about this...

FG Complain to EU about NAMA – Its a bit late?

Image via Wikipedia So Fine Gael’s Senator Eugene Regan made a formal complaint to the European Commission about NAMA. He claims the ‘scale and scope’ of the scheme is disproportionate to the size of the Irish economy, transfers too much risk from the banks onto the Irish taxpayer and does not contain sufficient safeguards that Irish depositors and borrowers will not be forced to pay for the huge mistakes by Irish banks. Now I think most people would agree...

Donegal South West By-Election: FG in the starting blocks.

Image via Wikipedia Fine Gael is set to hold its Convention for the Donegal South West By-election on February 15th. Joe McHugh TD (Donegal North East) has been appointed Director of Elections for the bye-election for Fine Gael. This will be a very interesting race considering the goings on over the budget at the County Council. Fianna Fail might not be too popular, but with it being a Fianna Fail seat up for grabs who knows what will happen....

It turns out that Ireland for Europe are still in existence as they are in a debt of about €150,000. They are blaming the spending of the no side for this. So to tackle this they are organising an event. An €160 a head one!! I dont see many people signing up for this one! I...
