63 years ago today Ireland become a Republic under the Republic of Ireland Act 1949. It was introduced by the first Inter-Party Government, led by Fine Gael Leader John A Costello and had cross party support and was passed unanimously in Dáil and Seanad Eireann. Mahon Report calls for Regional Authorities to be Directly Elected

One of the recommendations made in the Mahon Report, which is more then likely going to be over looked as most of the media will be looking at the findings against former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and others, is that Regional Authorities be directly elected. Tonight while visiting the parents I stumbled upon Bernard Dunne’s Bród Club on RTE One. The was random in itself as my parents were in Lisvernane, Co. Tipperary who won TG4′s G-Team last Friday (aired Sunday on TG4) at the weekend and had been talking about the language. The Campaign for Children will be holding a public meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 25th, at 6pm in the Geogrpahy Lecture Hall in UCC. It is part of a series of public meetings to inform people about the work of the campaign. The Campaign is chaired by Former Supreme Court Justice Catherine McGuinness. Its board also contains some influential people, including Fergus Finlay of Barnardos and Olivia O’Leary. Over the 12th and 13th of November I spent time in the Cork School Music on the Wave Change  programme from Social Entrepreneurs Ireland which I blogged about here. We The Citizens launched today. Its an interesting idea that is trying to get people to stand up and get involved to change Ireland. They plan to hold a National Citizens Assembly in June following events in n Kilkenny, Cork, Galway, Athlone, Letterkenny and Dublin. I shall be attending the event in Cork. The 2nd constituency in Cork to polled this week after Cork North Central’s poll on Monday for the Irish Times. The Irish Examiner commissioned a phone survey of 500 voters in Cork South Central.
