“Lisbon treaty now in Irish hands.”

Image via Wikipedia The above is according to Elmar Brok MEP (CDU/EPP). This because today the Czech Senate today approved the Treaty of Lisbon, leaving Ireland as the only EU member state not to have passed it. From the press release: “Now the Lisbon  treaty lies in the hands of Ireland  , because there is no alternative to the Lisbon treaty. The people in Ireland have made it clear that they want the European Union to be more democratic,...

Thats some voting record

Image via Wikipedia While reading blogs and surfing links I came across EPvote.eu. I may have linked in before. I think its a bit cumbersome but it will do until VoteWatch.eu launches next week.  I found out about that from Jan’s EUblog. While flitting around it, I came across some stats. And one very interesting one. The Dutch MEP Paul van Buitenen has a voting record that consists of abstaining on 98% of votes! Yes you read that right!...

“By George we got Lee”

So George Lee the now former Economics Editor of RTÉ will be standing for Fine Gael in the Dublin South By Election. Personally I am delighted that George is running for us in Dublin. Hes name was mentioned to me on a number of occasions but I was told he turned us down. How wrong those people were! George Lee is a man with his finger on the pulse of the Irish Economy. He warned us for years, and...

Okay, so Im agreeing with the her now, but I’m still not voting for her

Its kind of hard to ignore Kathy Sinnott. And its kind of hard to hate her when she says what you are thinking. Here is a video of her defending Net Neutrality. Still not voting for her though. In other news, there was a leafleter for Kathy Sinnott in Cork City on Sunday when I was wandering around with a friend. He went to hand us a leaflet, I said “No thanks” I never take leaflets, but my frien...

@greenparty_ie compare @deirdredeburca to @barackobama

So much for not blogging politics, but this cant be left go. I witnessed an “interaction” on twitter between the Green Party and  Peter of Donegan Landscaping. It was started with Peter pointing out that @Deirdredeburca only uses twitter for announcements. To which the Greenparty responded by saying Now this is a big mistake as many twitter users do not like accounts that are just announcements. They like people to reply and interact as pointed outThen they said the...

Marriage is an antiquated, failing institution based on inequality and traditional roles.

Image via Wikipedia The above title is a quote from Mark Simpsons article on Gay Marriage on Comment is Free in today’s Guardian. In his article “Gay people don’t need marriage” he argues that gay marriage “zealots” have gotten carried away and need to look at what the majority agree with. As he points out Civil Unions which giver nearly the same rights as marriage, for example Civil Partnerships in the UK, have the backing of “liberal and conservative,...

Blasphemous Libel

Okay so the whole Blasphemous Libel thing has taken off and is a cluster on Irish Blogs and a lot of people are up in arms about it. Some posts are offensive to some people. As pointed out to me on twitter. As blasphemy is a crime according to the constitution, it has never been so in criminal law. But what is Blasphemy? According to the Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia (On Reference.com) blasphemy, in religion, words or actions that display...

Diary of a Serial Canvasser – Part One

Image via Wikipedia I mentioned before how busy I was with canvassing and with tomorrow marking 5 weeks to election day I decided to start a bit of a diary on how the canvass is going. Lets start with last Wednesday. I went canvassing for Cllr. John Buttimer (South West Ward) in Deenrock in Togher. I would know a few people in the area here through being involved in the Scouts in Togher. It was a mix of a...

More EU Election stuff

Image via Wikipedia Well I haven’t blogged since Monday and I apologise! But I may make up for it today! So I have found a few things relating to the EU elections. First up is VoteMatch. Now I think its done by the same crowd who had the tool for the London Elections last year. This is based on the European Political Parties rather then the National Parties. You get asked to agree, disagree, neither with 30 statements and...
