As what has become the norm, a Sinn Fein candidate has topped the poll, Máire Devine topped the poll with 98 votes on the first count and was elected on the first count. Her running mate Paul Gavan came second with 90 first preference votes and was elected by her transfers on the second count.
Independent Senator Gerard Craughwell finished in third with 83 votes and should take a seat. He was elected on the 8th count following the elimination of Noel Cribbin.
For Fine Gael Jerry Buttimer took a commanding 81 votes and is certain of a seat on the panel. He was elected on the 10th count following the elimination of Maurice Cummins. There is hope for two more seats for Fine Gael if Joe O’Reilly and Neale Richmond can keep ahead of the Fianna Fail Candidates. Following the elimination of Terry Brennan on Count 18 it has assured the elected on Joe O’Reilly and Neale Richmond on the panel. Joe O’Reilly and Neale Richmond were elected on the 19th Count following Terry Brennan’s elimination.
Labour can be proud of Ged Nash’s performance here as he managed 74 votes. He is steadily picking up the transfers and will be elected as he has stayed ahead of many challengers. He finally reached the quota on the 19th count following the elimination of Fine Gael’s Terry Brennan.
Fianna Fail’s top vote getter is Jennifer Murnane O’Connor who got 55 votes. The party will be disappointed in Colm Keaveney who was eliminated on the 12th count and Kate Feeney on the 13th, but there will be hope for 3 seats by getting
Terry Leyden past Richmond or Prendeville to be elected with Murnane O’Connor and Robbie Gallagher. On Count 15 Jennifer
Murnane O’Connor and Ned O’Sullivan were elected following the elimination of Paul McAuliffe. On Count 17 following the transfers of the surplus of Murnane O’Connor and O’Sullivan, Robbie Gallagher joined his running mates in being
elected. Terry Leyden was also elected on the final count bringing to 4 the total number of seats won by Fianna Fail on this panel.
One to watch wil be AAA-PBP’s Cian Prendivillle who receieved 52 votes putting him a head of many FF and FG candidates but will he get the transfers? He’s steadily picking up transfers throughout the counts. Cian now
looks set not to win a seat. He did not pick up enough transfers to stay in contention with the party candidates as the count went on. A very impressive campaign though. One to watch for the future.
